Description |
Soshu style Nagamaki Katana
from the Koto period. Nice wide shape similar to those from the Nanbokucho
period, this sword shows a very active and wonderful hamon known as
"hitatsura" or more commonly known as "full temper".
Base portion of the hamon is made up of very nice choji-midare with
lots of activity. Ashi, yo and kinsuji are in abundance. The temper
also shows up all over the shinogi and ji as well, creating the full
temper effect. The style of the hamon looks like that from the Hasebe
School, which is famous for its Soshu full temper. Itame hada with
some mokume makes up the grain pattern. On the shinogi, there are
a few slight openings, but nothing serious. This is a very rare and
unusual sword, and is in very healthy condition. A nice soe-hi is
carved on both sides of the sword. Tang has 1 hole, but as the sword
has been greatly shortened, this is not the original tang. Many nagamaki
were very long (over 3 feet) at time of manufacture. Later they were
shortened for use as either katana or wakizashi. Very clean polish
with a 2 piece silver foiled habaki and shirasaya. |
